Returns 1 for line elements (e.g. beams), 2 for surface elements (e.g. plates/shells) and 3 for volume elements (e.g. solids) Note that axisymetric elements will return the lower code - so an axisymetric shell will return 1 and an axisymetric volume will return 2.
