How do I specify damping in a dynamic analysis?

Damping properties are typically specified as part of the material attribute definition and so may be defined separately for different sections of the structure. Damping is input using Rayleigh damping parameters.

Search the online help for "Defining Damping Properties" to find more information on the use of damping properties in Modeller.

Search for "2.4.3 Damping" in the Modeller to read a description of the Rayleigh damping method that is used. The calculation of the damping coefficients may be performed readily in a spreadsheet.

It is possible to request distributed damping values across the frequency range of interest. This is most easily performed by invoking the "Include Modal Damping" facility on the Eigenvalue Control form (Load Case Properties). Select "Set Damping..." and click HELP for more information. Note that this command produces an additional section in the LUSAS output file in which the damping factors for each requested eigenvalue are also output.
