Obtaining & Displaying Grillage Results
Before compiling many results and using them in design
calculations, it is prudent to carry out some cursory
checks on your model
Using the menu command:
View > Insert layer > Diagrams > Diagrams display tab (check) Label values
is usually the appropriate way to extract bending moments and
shear forces from a grillage model. However:
View > Insert layers > Values
is
not appropriate for obtaining general bending moment
or shear force results from a grillage. It displays
nodal average results - where three or more elements
meet at a node, clearly there are 3 or more load effects
(e.g. bending moments) to report - one for each element.
The nodal
average value displayed will not be the actual
load effect for the end of any of the three
elements but an average. It is usually used for obtaining
certain results from a plate or shell model and may be used
for reactions, deflections or Wood-Armer
results in a grillage model.
It is possible to present diagram results more clearly using
the options on the
TreeView > Layers > (double click) Diagrams >
Diagrams display tab
For example:
TreeView > Layers > (double click) Diagrams >
Diagrams display tab (check) Window summary
will display the loadcase, title and other useful information
for your printouts.
TreeView > Layers > (double click) Diagrams > Diagrams
display tab (text box on right hand side) % of element
length=50
will give you the results at the ends of the member, but
display them away from the element ends.
You can also change the font, size, angle of font & number
of significant figures to make your results easier to
view.
Note that if you check "Label only if
selected", Modeller will display values only for elements
(not lines) which are selected. To make selection of
elements (mesh) easier, you may wish to delete the geometry
layer from the TreeView > Layers tab or use a mesh selection
mode. Holding Shift down while clicking on (selecting)
several elements adds to the selection. Holding CTRL down
while clicking on (selecting) several elements adds or
subtracts (toggles) the selection.
You can use the "Groups" facility to display
results for any defined group such as longitudinal beams or
transverse deck elements.
The quality of your prints may be further enhanced by using
the File > Page Setup options and by using View > Page layout
mode. Lastly, don't forget that you can copy and paste anything
in LUSAS Modeller into other Windows-native products such as MS
Word, simply by using the copy and paste buttons on the toolbar
or Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V
