Using Joint Elements with Higher
Order Elements
It is possible to use higher order elements (i.e. midside
nodes present) in conjunction with joint elements but we
normally suggest working with low order elements (only corner
nodes present) since higher order elements are susceptible
to element mechanisms.
If the structure geometry or the variation
of results demands higher order elements then consider invoking
fine integration (if available), which will eliminate these
mechanisms at the slight expense of a slighter stiffer solution.
See the section entitled "Recommendation on Usage"
in the Element Reference Manual under the specific element
type of interest - there are further comments on the appropriateness
of the available element integration schemes.
If low order elements are acceptable, then
consider the use of an enhanced strain element. These perform
extremely well in comparison with their higher order counterparts.

Order Elements" in the online help for more information
on this subject.
