Prototype carbon fibre
footbridge for the UK's rail network
Global modelling of
construction stages and dynamic effects
Localised modelling of
components
LUSAS software was used by Network
Rail to assist in its development of a prototype carbon fibre
footbridge, allowing the design team to optimise the staged
construction sequence, accurately predict structural behaviour, and
evaluate key components using localised models. A global model of the whole bridge
allowed construction stages and dynamic effects to be assessed.
Localised models included those for the carbon fibre stair ‘heels’,
as used to support the stair and floor panels, and also for the main
support heels, with their even more complex geometry.

"The
interface for importing models and creating complex geometry was
relatively straightforward, allowing us to optimise the staged
construction sequence and accurately predict structural behaviour.
In addition, the ability to solve different analyses in the same
model really eased the design workflow and made analysing an
innovative and complex structure fun and enjoyable."
